Chinese: the linguistic bridge to a growing global economy

Chinese, spoken by more than one billion people, is not only the language with the most native speakers in the world, but also a gateway to one of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies.

Addressing Chinese audiences in their own language is crucial, as it demonstrates respect and appreciation for China’s rich culture and traditions, which helps establish a deeper and more meaningful connection with consumers. By communicating in Chinese, we can overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, facilitating understanding and acceptance of products or services by the Chinese market. This is particularly important in a market as diverse and nuanced as China, where each region and dialect can have its own linguistic and cultural characteristics.

With Chinese translation your company can:

Extend the global nature of your business and reach a wider audience.

Expand into new markets and increase international sales.

Facilitate communication and increase customer and supplier confidence.

Save time, save money and avoid errors in communication management.

Where is Chinese spoken?

The Chinese language originated in present-day northeastern China, and is currently the most widely spoken language family in the world. Mandarin is the most widely spoken variety, followed by regional dialects such as Cantonese, Wu, Min, Xiang and Hakka. Mandarin is the only official language of China and is the predominant language in mainland China and Taiwan. Cantonese is spoken in Hong Kong and Macau, Wu in Shanghai, and Mǐn nán in Fujian and Taiwan. These variants are also present in Chinese diaspora communities. For example, Cantonese is more common than Mandarin in Western countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Localization and adaptation of Chinese variants

We adapt your content to the culture and variants of the language

Translations adapted to the varieties of Chinese: beyond Mandarin and Cantonese

Chinese is not a single language, but a macrolanguage or family of languages. Although Mandarin Chinese (or Putonghua) is official in China, where the term “dialects” (方言, fāngyán) is commonly used to refer to its other variants, the reality is that mutual intelligibility between them is almost non-existent. This leads many linguists to consider each with its own identity, as among dialects such as Mandarin, Cantonese, Mǐn Nán, Wu, Jin and Xiang, each presents its unique phonetic and cultural characteristics.

For example, Mandarin, predominant in mainland China and Taiwan, differs significantly from the Cantonese spoken in Hong Kong and Macau, not only in pronunciation but also in the writing of the characters.

In addition, the Mǐn Nán, Wu, Jin and Xiang dialects, each predominant in their respective regions, vary in tone, pronunciation and vocabulary, requiring specialized knowledge to ensure accuracy.

At iDISC, we understand this complexity and provide accurate and culturally appropriate translations for the variant of Chinese your project requires while maintaining authenticity and cultural accuracy.

Frequently asked questions about Chinese translation

What kind of documents can we translate into Chinese?

We can translate any file type or format. We extract the content, translate it and return the translated document respecting the formatting. We use tools that show the approved updates in the original text in order to apply them faithfully in the translated versions. All this without the need for a designer, editor or programmer.

How do I request a Chinese translation?

It’s very simple! All you have to do is fill out this form, attach the document you wish to translate and indicate the language and delivery date. We will contact you as soon as possible and start the translation process so that you can receive your translations without delay.

How is the price of a Chinese translation calculated?

The translation rate for a document is calculated based on the number of words to be translated. Depending on the project, there are several factors that can influence the final price, such as language combination, content type, source format and delivery time, among others. Similarly, repeated phrases or words can reduce the cost of translation thanks to the use of technological tools.

How long does a Chinese translation take?

The usual waiting time to receive a simple translation is between 2 and 3 working days. The turnaround time depends mainly on the volume of words, but also on the degree of specialization of the vocabulary. To give you a rough idea, a translator usually translates between 2000 and 2500 words per day on average. Subsequently, this work must be reviewed by another translator, who may process around double or triple the number of words per day in proofreading tasks.

What guarantees are in place to ensure translation quality and confidentiality?

At iDISC, we comply with the quality standards ISO 9001, ISO 17100 and ISO 18587, which establish requirements for professional competence and processes in translation services to ensure that translations are fit for purpose.

In addition, with ISO 27001-accredited processes and in compliance with the GDPR, we ensure the confidentiality of your translations and protect all your information with the latest cybersecurity tools, using secure systems for the storage, access to and transmission of documents.
